Highlands Hockey Association -
About us Our
history
Our inaugural season began with two teams
on the ice and a total of 35 players. The season ended with the Highlands Hockey Bantam
team winning the house league championship title at Sport O Rama in Monsey, New York. By
the Fall of 1997 the initial efforts had grown to sponsoring four teams with over 75
active players. The year 1998 saw the Associations proposal to the NHRHS Board of
Education finding acceptance with the first Junior Varsity ice hockey team becoming a
reality at the high school. The vision of the organizing parents has come to full fruition
this Winter, finding us with over 125 young skaters on the ice, playing on seven teams
wearing the Highlands Hockey Association jersey and Junior Varsity and Varsity teams at
the high school.
What we do
We help to coach, train and nurture
children who want to learn and play ice hockey. This is accomplished through the
assistance and efforts of volunteer parents who donate their time, energy and resources to
the cause. We have two seasons each year. The Spring season begins the end of March and
runs to mid June. The Winter season begins the very end of September and finishes late
February. The different programs that Highlands Hockey sponsors are:
Pre-Mites (ages 5-7 years):
where beginning ice skaters can start to learn the most basic of ice hockey skills. All
training sessions are held at Fritz Dietl Ice Skating Rink in Westwood.
Mites (ages 6-8 years):
ice skaters are taught the principles of the game and begin playing together as a house
league team at Sport O Rama in Monsey. Additional training and practice sessions are held
at Fritz Dietl Ice Skating Rink in Westwood. At this level there is no checking allowed
and scores are not posted. The coaches are on the ice through out the game. It is purely a
training and learning experience.
Squirts (ages 9-10 years):
ice skaters begin to play independently as a team. Scoring and standings are posted.
Coaches are no longer allowed on the ice during games. They skate as a house league team
at Sport O Rama in Monsey. Additional training and practice sessions are held at Fritz
Dietl Ice Skating Rink in Westwood. On occasion the team may enter a tournament and
compete. At this level there is still no checking allowed.
PeeWee (ages 11-12 years):
competitive game play is learned, continuing to build on all the basic skills with the
addition of checking at this level. They skate as a house league team at Sport O Rama in
Monsey. Additional training and practice sessions are held at Fritz Dietl Ice Skating Rink
in Westwood.
Bantams (ages 13-14 years):
the pace begins to pick up, as players learn to use all the basic skills in an
increasingly competitive environment, adding active line changes to their capabilities.
They skate as a house league team at Sport O Rama in Monsey. Additional training and
practice sessions are held at Fritz Dietl Ice Skating Rink in Westwood.
Junior Varsity, Varsity (ages
15-18 years): during the Spring season skate as a Highlands Hockey Association
house league team at Sport O Rama. The Winter season sees the players as a Northern
Highlands Regional High School team with home games at Sport O Rama and away games on the
road.
How we do it
The Highlands Hockey Association
underwrites the costs associated with maintaining all the ongoing programs, including the
Northern Highlands High School Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. A combination of player
fees, fund raisers and donations help to keep us on a sound financial basis. We are
recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a non profit organization qualifying under
section 501 (c.) 3, for tax reporting purposes.
