Your
family ancestry
Learn about your family roots
Several years ago, I was bitten by the
'family ancestry' bug. While I'm still not sure when
it happened, I have become somewhat obsessed with finding
out the names and personal stories of my ancestors.
In order to manage a project of this
complexity and magnitude, you will need to consider the
following resources.
-
Ancestry.com The best web site (annual fee) to
find census, naturalization, military, and social security
information.
-
Castlegarden.org
- Before Ellis Island, immigrants' first stop in NY was
here. They have a lot of digitized info.
-
ItalianGen.org If your family lived in NYC, this
site offers
FREE birth, marriage, naturalization, and death records -
provided by volunteers. It's an incredible
resource.
-
RootsWeb.com A large data base of Social
Security records.
-
NY Vital Records A wonderful explanation of NY
State and City records from JewishGen.com
Convert your family photos,
slides, and film into digital files
-
DiJiFi.com- This
Brooklyn, NY based company does an incredible job
converting almost any kind of media into digital media
(film, slides, VHS tapes, etc.). They converted my
60 year old family films into digital AVI files for
viewing and editing - and put them on a small hard drive
for me. They also color corrected the videos and
they look great! Fast turn around, local, and
reasonably priced. I simply put everything into a
box and shipped the box to them in Brooklyn. Got an
estimate in a few days. If you want to preserve
your multimedia memories, you have to convert everything
to digital files.
